Apex Legends Developers Release Major Breach Update for the Game's Seventh Anniversary

The Apex Legends team has released the major Breach update, timed to coincide with the project's seventh anniversary. With the launch of Season 28, the game introduces fundamentally new mechanics, reworked characters, beloved returning elements, and a celebratory rewards program.

One of the key innovations is the Hardlight mechanic — destructible light screens that replace open window openings in buildings. These screens protect players taking cover behind them, but they can be shattered: certain weapon classes and legend abilities are particularly effective against Hardlight. The new mechanic is already available on the Broken Moon, World’s Edge, E‑District maps, and in the training area. Furthermore, legends of the Controller class gained the ability to repair and reinforce these screens — up to four fortifications can be maintained simultaneously. Hardlight opens up wide tactical possibilities: from reliably locking down buildings to daring attacks through breached openings.

Significant changes have also been made to a number of characters. Fuse received a complete overhaul, including a new version of his ultimate ability, changes to his tactical ability, and additional enhancements. Bloodhound and Catalyst also received updated skill sets. The developers promise to detail the creation process of these changes on February 6th in Designer’s Notes, with the full patch notes to be published on February 9th.

An important decision was the return of the dropship to ranked matches. After several seasons of experimenting with controlled drop zones, the developers abandoned this mechanic, heeding community feedback. Players now start the battle from the dropship again, giving them back control over their starting position and strategy. Previously, random distribution across zones drew criticism due to dependence on starting resources and proximity to other teams — these limitations have now been removed.

In response to numerous player requests, Season 28 introduces expanded audio settings. It is now possible to finely tune the volume of legend dialogue, ping system audio alerts, and the announcer's voice. This is a continuation of the work on improving the audio environment: Season 27 added the Focused Mix mode, and now personalization options have become even broader.

The Bot Royale mode has also been reworked and is now called Bot Royale Evolved. In the updated format, lobbies include from one to five full human squads and numerous enhanced bots. The developers have removed the experience gain limit and restrictions on challenge progress (except for badges and statistics). The mode's difficulty has been increased for low and mid-skill players, while rewards have become more generous. This format is suitable both for newcomers wanting to understand the game's mechanics and for experienced players looking to have relaxed matches with friends.

A special place in the update is given to the celebration of Apex Legends' seventh anniversary. From February 10th to March 10th, 2026, players will be able to earn a free anniversary reward track. It includes exclusive items created with the participation of talented community artists and inspired by the work of long-time Apex content creators. To earn the rewards, players simply need to log into the game and participate in matches during the specified period.
