The Pokemon Company Apologized for the Foolish Idea of Holding a Pokemon TCG Event at the Yasukuni Shrine
The Pokemon Company (TPC) canceled and apologized for a card game event that was supposed to take place at the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo — a location that provokes sharp political disputes. The event was posted on the official website for local tournament organizers.
The company explained the publication as a result of "insufficient verification" and stated that to prevent such incidents in the future, it will review its moderation system. "We sincerely apologize for the various reactions and opinions caused by this publication," TPC noted.
The Yasukuni Shrine, where those who died in wars from 1869 to 1954 are commemorated, is a controversial symbol due to the inclusion of over a thousand convicted war criminals from World War II on its lists of honor. The news about the event sparked sharp criticism, especially in China, after which the company promptly removed the announcement.
Despite the incident, the franchise's plans for 2026, including its 30th anniversary, remain unchanged. It is expected that a presentation will take place in February on Pokemon Day, where new games may be shown — Pokemon Pokopia and Pokemon Champions — as well as the possible announcement of the next generation of the main series.
