Metroidvania God of War: Sons of Sparta Receives Press Scores: Reviews Are Good, But They Don't Recommend Playing It
A Paradox!
God of War: Sons of Sparta, announced and released on PS5 on the same day, became the main surprise of February's State of Play, but it divided players into two camps. In the PlayStation Store, the project receives high ratings, yet professional reviewers are much more reserved.
This 2D spin-off offers 10–12 hours of Greek action with a solid combat system, an atmospheric soundtrack, and thoughtful level design. Fans praise the game for its return to roots and its concise story, which fits organically into Kratos's expanded universe.
However, critics point to the flip side: formulaic enemies, predictable skill progression, and the developers' reluctance to take risks. The game is called solid but too safe, lacking the fresh ideas that could have transformed it from just a good title into something more.
As a result, a paradoxical situation has emerged: on Open Critic, the game has a 75% approval score, but only 33% of recommendations to play it.
