Bethesda Strives to Protect the Fallout Universe Canon

In a recent interview, Bethesda's lead writer Emil Pagliarulo clearly outlined the studio's stance regarding the Fallout universe canon. He emphasized that the developers are categorically against revising established facts and consider preserving the integrity of the lore one of their most important tasks.

According to Pagliarulo, working with the canon is not just a professional duty but also a special honor. He noted that any disregard for the details of the universe is instantly noticed by fans. If someone thinks a particular detail is insignificant, the community quickly reminds them otherwise. For Fallout fans, every component of the lore is fundamentally important—whether it pertains to the pre-war period or the post-Great War era.

Pagliarulo, who has experience as a quest designer for Fallout 3, then as lead writer for Fallout 4 and Fallout Shelter (as well as involvement in developing Skyrim and Starfield), admitted that maintaining narrative coherence is a serious creative challenge. He categorically rejects retconning, calling it a "terrible thing." According to him, the studio never seeks to rewrite what has already been created but gladly supplements the existing canvas—provided that new elements do not contradict what was established before.
