Looks like "hardware obsolescence" is coming for Windows 11 too: Microsoft officially agreed to hand over user encryption keys to the FBI
Microsoft has confirmed that, by court order, it hands over BitLocker encryption keys to law enforcement agencies. The keys are automatically saved to the company's cloud when a user signs in with a Microsoft account. This feature can be disabled, leaving the key only on the device.
In most cases, the company cannot fulfill such requests—there are about 20 per year—due to the absence of keys in the cloud.
Other tech giants, such as Apple and Meta, follow a different policy, either denying access or encrypting keys in a way that only the user can retrieve them.
Microsoft's policy raises privacy concerns. Experts advise disabling cloud key storage if privacy is a priority.
