Russians spend an average of up to 8.5 hours per day on the internet, placing the country fifth in the world for this metric, trailing only South Africa, Brazil, the Philippines, and Argentina. This data is provided by the Association of Electronic Communications in its annual study.
Most often, users search for information via search engines and reference services—74% of cases. News consumption comes in second: 66% of Russians regularly follow events through portals, aggregators, and Telegram channels. Communication with loved ones rounds out the top three—65%.
By the beginning of 2025, 92% of Russian households had internet access—a record high. The monthly internet audience is 103 million people, or 84% of the population aged 12 and older. The main barrier remains age: 46% of people over 60 do not use the internet, while among young people aged 18–30, that figure is only 1%.
Over 117 million citizens are registered on the "Gosuslugi" portal—about 95% of the population aged 14 and older. In the first quarter of 2025, 218 million online applications were submitted through the service.
Marketplaces are also growing rapidly: in 2024, their audience increased by 41%, with regions outpacing Moscow and St. Petersburg in the rate of online purchases. The leaders in growth were the Omsk and Chelyabinsk regions, as well as the Perm and Krasnoyarsk territories.
