James Cameron Will Start Saving on Breakfasts and Cutting the Budget for Future “Avatars”
After the modest box office performance of the film Avatar: The Fire and the Ash, director James Cameron has become seriously concerned about the financial sustainability of the franchise. In an interview with Taiwan’s TVBS News, he explicitly stated that the future of the series depends on the ability to significantly reduce production costs. If this cannot be achieved, the fourth and fifth parts may never make it to the big screen.
Cameron pointed out the overall difficult situation in the film industry and particularly emphasized that the budget for the third part has gone beyond all reasonable limits — even considering the resources of Disney studio. According to insiders, the production of Avatar 3 cost more than $400 million.
At the same time, despite an impressive total of $1.32 billion, box office revenues fall noticeably short of the previous film in the series. The Way of Water managed to earn $2.32 billion, and analysts consider it nearly impossible for Avatar: The Fire and the Ash to reach even the two-billion mark.
Such a significant gap in box office takings forces the director to seriously reconsider the approach to creating future films. Although the studio has officially announced the premieres of the fourth and fifth films — December 21, 2029, and December 19, 2031, respectively — these dates now seem more tentative.
James Cameron insists: to continue the Avatar story, it is necessary to find ways to significantly cut production costs without losing quality.
