Sonic Terror combines XCOM-style tactics with rock band management in an alternate 1984
Music instead of weapons, a tour instead of war, and an alien parasite that fears riffs
Studio Book Burner Games, with support from publisher Human Qube Games, has announced Sonic Terror — a turn-based tactical RPG where basslines, drum beats, and guitar riffs completely replace swords and spells.
The game unfolds in an alternate 1984 within the territory of a totalitarian Republic overrun by an alien parasite capable of taking over bodies. The invaders impose a cult of silence, and the only thing they truly fear is music.
The player controls an underground rock band touring cities, combining concerts with sabotage of the regime. Each performance here is a full-fledged tactical battle on hexagonal maps. Sonic Terror has no rhythm QTEs, random dice rolls, or probabilities: the game focuses on pure planning and execution. Musical parts function as combat abilities — guitar riffs, bass, and drums become devastating spells.
The band has only three musicians, and this is a deliberate design choice: the small roster allows for deeper exploration of characters, synergy, and the consequences of mistakes. Losing a member is felt acutely, and conflicts between heroes become part of the gameplay. The player must not only defeat enemies but also keep the group from falling apart.
Sonic Terror combines tactics with elements of management and survival. Musicians need food, sleep, and basic care, and the game tracks sobriety, inspiration, and the overall condition of the band alongside survival. One bad evening can trigger a chain of problems capable of derailing the entire tour.
The developers separately highlight the adaptive soundtrack: the music intensifies with successes and fades when the group takes damage. Thus, defeats are felt not only visually but also audibly, which is directly tied to the theme of a world trying to force everyone into silence.
The journey begins on a bus with a mysterious driver at the wheel. As they progress along the route, players will uncover the true reasons for the invasion, upgrade instruments and equipment using alien technology, and make decisions that affect the fate of the group and the story's ending.
Sonic Terror is in development for PC (Steam). Console versions are planned but will be announced later. A release date has not yet been announced.
