The servers of the failed shooter Highguard will shut down today
The multiplayer shooter Highguard shuts down today. The free project lasted under two months after release — more a flash than a run.
Early numbers looked promising: peak online players approached 100,000. That promise didn’t last. Technical issues (e.g., crashes and lag) eroded patience, a poor showing at The Game Awards killed a lot of the remaining buzz, and Steam quickly filled with harsh reviews. Promises about future content and a roadmap arrived but failed to reverse the slide.
After that came layoffs at Wildlight and Tencent pulling back funding. In the end the team chose what felt inevitable: switch the servers off. TBH, it’s a blunt, disappointing end — not rare in live games, but still jarring.
