World of Warcraft Cinematics Editor Unsure About the Feasibility of a Game-Based Series
Players have long wanted to see an animated series or film based on World of Warcraft, citing the success of Riot's "Arcane." However, the lead editor of the WoW team, Mike Schaffnit, explained why this might not be profitable for Blizzard.
He noted that even "Arcane," for all its quality, did not bring enough new players to League of Legends to justify the high costs. WoW could face the same problem. The key question is how to recoup production costs. The 2016 Warcraft film's theatrical release was saved only by its success in China. On streaming platforms, the project would have to compete with a vast amount of other content.
Furthermore, even within the community, there is no unity in expectations. For example, the artistic style of the recent "Coming Home" cinematic has already sparked disagreements.
Schaffnit emphasized that these are his personal reflections, not the company's position. However, he reminded that such projects require funding, and the company must pay the creators.
Thus, despite fan desires, the creation of a WoW series remains uncertain due to economic risks and monetization challenges.
