HBO's Martin Wants More, He Will Release the Prequel "Game of Thrones: The Mad King" — You'll Have to Go to the Theater
George Martin is no longer satisfied with just TV series based on "A Song of Ice and Fire" on HBO to decently avoid writing books: another prequel titled "Game of Thrones: The Mad King" will be shown on theatrical stages.
Martin is working together with the Royal Shakespeare Company as creator and executive producer. The production will be staged in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, in the summer of 2026, with tickets going on sale in April.
In Harrenhal, the long winter recedes and spring arrives, and during a knightly tournament, a conspiracy brews against Aerys II Targaryen. All of this takes place ten years before the start of "Game of Thrones."
When I first wrote "Game of Thrones," I never imagined it would be anything other than a book. It was a place where my imagination could exist without limits. To my great surprise, it was turned into a TV series, and viewers were able to enter the world of my imagination through television. That my work is now being adapted for the stage is something I did not expect but welcome with great enthusiasm and excitement. Theater offers something unique. A place where my imagination and the audience's imagination can meet and, hopefully, create something magical.
