Jon Van Caneghem Talks About Creating the Might and Magic Universe and the Upcoming Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era

The studio Unfrozen, working on the new game Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, has published a lengthy interview with Jon Van Caneghem—the creator of the iconic universe. The legendary game designer shared memories of the series' origins, talked about the technical challenges of past years, and gave his thoughts on the upcoming title.

Jon Van Caneghem began his journey with a passion for tabletop role-playing games and complex strategy games. He wanted to play every day, but couldn't always gather a group of friends—this is what pushed him to study programming on his own.

The name Might and Magic didn't appear by chance: it reflects the basic concept of the game's balance. According to the developer, might (physical strength) is contrasted with magic (magical abilities). To find the perfect words, Jon flipped through a thesaurus—it was important to him that the name accurately conveyed the fantasy atmosphere.

One of the key features of the series' strategic offshoot became the squads of creatures united into single groups. This mechanic, as Van Caneghem explained, came straight from board games with their emphasis on resource management. In the video game, hired creatures became a kind of resource: the player accumulates them, distributes them, and spends them in tactical battles—exactly like managing supplies in a tabletop strategy.

The game designer admitted that he was always a fan of the Star Trek series and therefore incorporated elements of science fiction into his early projects. This approach led to the appearance of the futuristic city of Forge in Heroes of Might and Magic 3. However, fans received the innovation coolly: most wanted to see pure fantasy in the game, without space-age technology. In the end, they had to abandon this faction.

Jon named World of Xeen as his favorite game in the original role-playing line. According to him, this project became special because it allowed the merging of two independent worlds into one large-scale world—a real breakthrough for its time.

To conclude the conversation, Jon Van Caneghem shared his impressions of the early version of Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era. The series' founder was strongly impressed: he called the project amazing and highly praised the work of the Unfrozen studio. According to the game designer, the new game successfully captures the spirit of the classic second and third installments of the universe, while organically introducing many fresh ideas. Jon was especially impressed that some of the new mechanics were once discussed by his old team back in the 1990s—but technical limitations of the hardware at the time didn't allow them to be implemented. Now, thanks to modern technology, these ideas can finally come to life.

The interview gives fans of the series an opportunity not only to glimpse into the history of the legendary franchise's creation but also to look optimistically at the future of Heroes of Might and Magic. Judging by the words of its creator, Olden Era could become a worthy continuation of the traditions laid down many years ago.
