Americans are doing what they love: stealing DDR memory from store display PCs
Amid shortages and sharp price increases for components in the US, thefts from PC display builds in stores have become more frequent. The Costco chain was forced to take extreme measures: in a number of locations, they are removing RAM and video cards from display computers, leaving only empty cases with descriptions on the shelves.
A recent incident that drew attention happened two weeks ago: someone smashed the glass of a display PC case and stole only the DDR5 sticks, whose market price is currently several times higher than the recommended price.
A source on Reddit, a retail employee, reported that Costco even caught one of the thieves, who turned out to be a delivery service courier.
Costco representatives declined to comment on specific cases but confirmed that in some stores they are indeed enhancing the protection of display equipment.
