GOG Promises to Add Original "Sands of Time" to Game Preservation Program

Amidst the news of the cancellation of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, GOG announced that they intend to add the original "Sands of Time" to their program for preserving old games as soon as possible. After all, it's not just a classic, but a "true masterpiece that deserves to shine even brighter than before."

Recall that in November 2024, the GOG team announced the GOG Preservation Program — an initiative designed to ensure games have "eternal life." If a title has the program's corresponding icon, it means the game is compatible with modern systems, supports popular resolutions and controllers, and does not contain critical bugs (which GOG fixes on its own).

While today’s news about the cancelled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake hit hard and might be disappointing for many of us, it also gives us an opportunity to celebrate the game that started it all. Not just a classic, but a masterpiece that deserves to shine brighter…

"We are happy to announce that we will be working hard to include the original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time in the GOG game preservation program as soon as possible!" — reads the message from the platform.

The specialists also emphasized that they are "putting their heart and soul" into it and doing everything possible to create the best version of "Sands of Time." "We see you, we are going through this moment with you, and we support you," — GOG concluded the post with these words.

In addition to the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, Ubisoft canceled five other projects and postponed the launch of seven more. If we believe a person who claimed to be a former developer of the remake, the game "was close to the finish line." Furthermore, the project's leadership allegedly failed to form a unified vision, resulting in the involved teams moving in different directions. However, the user did not provide proof for his statements due to an active non-disclosure agreement. Therefore, his information should not be taken at face value.
