A year on from the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows — the entry that finally landed the franchise in Japan — the team has been unpacking what it actually changed. The game launched on PC and current‑gen consoles (and was later ported to Nintendo Switch 2), and it sits at an 81 on Metacritic. Numbers, sure, but they’re not the whole story.
Thierry Dansereau, art director, told GamesRadar that several of Shadows’ technical advances are headed into future projects. The micropolygon system. ATMOS tech. Dynamic weather. Short version: those bits of tech are being treated as building blocks, and devs expect to reuse them across upcoming releases.
Visual tweaks weren’t the only carryover. Dansereau also pointed to changes in movement, stealth, and combat — parkour feels updated, stealth systems got reworked, and combat has been adjusted too. In other words, the game served as a live test for both art-side and gameplay tech, not merely a standalone experiment.
So: Shadows matters less as a one-off score on a review site and more as a lab where Ubisoft’s next moves were prototyped. Whether every idea survives intact is another question, but the title has clearly influenced the studio’s roadmap.
