For the First Time in History, ISS Crew to Be Evacuated Early
For the first time in the history of the International Space Station, the crew is returning to Earth early for medical reasons. NASA has decided on the early return of the four astronauts from the Crew-11 mission due to the health condition of one crew member. The agency emphasized that the situation is not an emergency—the astronaut is stable and not in danger. The return has been expedited because full diagnosis and treatment require resources unavailable on the ISS.
The crew, consisting of NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Michael Fincke, Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui, and Russian Oleg Platonov, departed for the station on the SpaceX Crew Dragon on August 1, 2025. Their six-month mission was nearing completion, which simplified the decision for early return.
