Valve's secret developer success tier details revealed
The Steam developer community is increasingly discussing an unusual ritual at Valve. At the end of the year, the company sends premium chocolate to its most successful game authors.
The most detailed description of the "chocolate program" was provided by game marketing consultant Chris Zukowski. In December, he summarized information gathered over years of communicating with developers.
According to Zukowski, Valve sets two key annual revenue thresholds:
- upon reaching $800,000, developers receive a box of chocolate worth about $150;
- those who surpass the $2 million mark receive a more expensive box — costing approximately $250.
Although developers' income significantly exceeds the cost of the gifts, many perceive this initiative as a warm and personal way to congratulate authors on their successes. For Valve, this appears to be less about material reward and more a symbolic gesture of attention — a way to say "thank you" and wish happy holidays to those who have achieved notable results on the Steam platform.
