Arc Raiders Developers Plan to Overhaul the "Expeditions" Mechanic

The "Expedition" system remains one of the most discussed mechanics in Arc Raiders. This optional seasonal mechanic allows players to voluntarily reset their progress approximately every two months in exchange for special rewards: additional storage slots, perk points, and exclusive cosmetics. However, in practice, its implementation has caused significant disagreement within the gaming community.

Participating in an expedition requires gathering a significant list of items and essentially sacrificing accumulated progress. Not only is the inventory reset, but so is quest progress and the collection of rare schematics, the gathering of which takes dozens of hours.

Arc Raiders Design Director Virgil Watkins acknowledged that the current version of the system is far from perfect. Initially, the developers planned to create an experimental mechanic that would not force players to wipe but would make it an attractive choice.

The main problems with the system are related to several aspects. Despite lowering the entry threshold from 5 to 3 million coins, the expedition still requires significant investment. The size of the reward directly depends on accumulated wealth, which some players consider unfair.

The schematic issue is considered the most painful. While completely preserving schematics is not ruled out, the developers are considering alternative solutions to reduce player frustration.

Embark Studios plans to gradually improve the system. The main areas of change include integrating expeditions with diverse gameplay loops, revising the reward system, and optimizing the schematic acquisition process.
