Arc Raiders Developers Decided Not to Kill Their Game by Adding an Auction

A Wise Decision!

The developers of Arc Raiders from Embark Studios have abandoned plans to implement a full-fledged auction system. According to Lead Designer Virgil Watkins, such a mechanic was undermining the core gameplay loop based on searching for and collecting loot, turning the game into a simple money-making exercise.

Although the studio had expressed a desire to develop player-to-player trading, experiments showed that a classic auction redirects all efforts towards currency farming, depriving players of the joy of exploring the world and finding specific items.

However, Embark is not abandoning the idea of exchange altogether. Instead of an impersonal market, the studio wants to create a more social and "lively" form of trading, for example, through animations of directly handing items between characters. This approach aims to preserve the value of discoveries and the motivation to explore, without replacing it with a simple accumulation mechanic.
