Another insider confirms PlayStation Portal's transition to OLED screen version
According to insider Kepler_L2, Sony is developing an updated version of the PlayStation Portal handheld device. The main highlight of the upcoming model is expected to be the switch to an OLED screen, which will significantly improve image quality compared to the current version equipped with an LCD display. The new screen is anticipated to provide deeper blacks, higher contrast, and richer color reproduction.
Another source, Zuby_Tech, previously reported that the device might gain support for a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. If confirmed, gameplay will become noticeably smoother — especially in dynamic projects designed for high FPS. The updated model is already being tentatively called PlayStation Portal Pro.
Kepler_L2 claims that the presentation and release of the updated device are scheduled for 2026. However, this is still just insider information: Sony has not officially announced a new version, its specifications, or an estimated price.
Interest in the update is fueled by recent software improvements for the PlayStation Portal. For example, the latest major update added support for cloud streaming for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. Now users can launch games without needing to turn on their home console — a stable internet connection is sufficient. Last year, the company also expanded the lineup by introducing a black version of the device, but the upcoming changes appear to be much more significant.
Furthermore, Kepler_L2 shared information about two versions of a full-fledged PlayStation portable console currently in development. The first will belong to the current generation and will be able to run PS5 games. The second is conceived as a "budget" version of the stationary PS6 — a low-power console in a pocket form factor, conceptually similar to the Xbox Series S. According to the insider, one of these models will be based on RDNA5, but details are not yet disclosed.
