Warhorse Studios officially confirmed the long-rumored development of two major RPGs at once.
The team behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance II says they’re working in parallel on the next Kingdom Come and on a new role-playing title set in The Lord of the Rings universe.
Details are scarce for now, and the studio promises more “when the time comes.” Given that the second Kingdom Come only just arrived and that Warhorse is still supporting it, don’t expect a flood of info any time soon — patience required.
After Kingdom Come’s reception, Warhorse has a certain reputation: deep, uncompromising RPGs rather than watered-down, "casual" fare. That makes the idea of their take on Tolkien appealing in a particular way — not necessarily another licensed action romp, but maybe something that leans into setting, immersion, and classic role-playing systems rather than spectacle alone.
One notable change: Daniel Vávra, a lead author on Kingdom Come, won’t be involved. He said he’s stepped away from game development to work on a film adaptation of the series. i.e., a big creative shift for him, and for the studio; how it ripples into these projects remains to be seen.
On top of that, Insider Gaming previously reported a separate The Lord of the Rings game from Crystal Dynamics, so there may be multiple takes on the same universe in development at once.
For now it’s mostly promise and possibilities. Fans of single-player RPGs have reasons to be curious — and, frankly, a bit patient.
