Rebecca Ford, Warframe's creative director, quipped: "Every time I see discussions about Steam charts, it feels like people are rooting for their teams as if they were following the batting average in baseball." She allowed that fan comparisons aren't useless — sales and concurrent-player numbers do offer signals — but she also pointed out that genre and entrenched expectations often bend those signals in predictable ways. Oddly enough, similar counting and comparing show up in cinema and music; the habit predates games.
Trying to judge a studio by one stat is a trap. Ford reminded listeners that a title can move only a few copies and still collect effusive praise, while a mass-market hit might be slammed by both critics and players. Context matters; metrics alone don’t tell the whole story.
Warframe is marking its 13th anniv. right now. To celebrate, a special in-game event has started, where players can grab rewards from previous yrs alongside some brand-new items.
