Yesterday, Amazon revealed the first still from the upcoming God of War adaptation, featuring Kratos (Ryan Hurst) alongside his son Atreus (Callum Vinson). Online users' most frequent complaint is the heroes' overly "polished" appearance. Some believe Prime Video shouldn't have given the project anti-publicity with a staged photo and should have released a trailer instead, where the actors would undoubtedly look much more impressive.
"The problem with adaptations of realistically looking video games is that some of them will inevitably look like a sketch from Saturday Night Live."
"He doesn't look like a battle-hardened warrior like he did in the game. And his outfit either. Maybe it's the lighting. We'll wait and see."
Some even suspected the company of using AI to generate the image. Which, of course, is highly unlikely. But in any case, the seed of skepticism has been sown.
A reminder of the other confirmed cast members:
- The role of Baldur will be played by Ed Skrein (Deadpool, Game of Thrones).
- The characters of Mimir, Sindri, and Brok will be embodied by Alastair Duncan, Jeff Gulka, and Danny Woodburn respectively. Interestingly, the first played the same role in God of War (2018) and its sequel.
- Mandy Patinkin, known for Homeland, will transform into Odin.
- Thor will be played by the star of Lady Dynamite and The Deep Ólafur Darri Ólafsson.
- The role of his wife Sif will be played by Teresa Palmer (Stuntwomen).
Filming is reportedly set to begin in March 2026 in Vancouver. The showrunner is listed as the creator of Outlander and For All Mankind, Ronald D. Moore. And the first two episodes are allegedly being directed by Fred Tua, known for Fallout and The Boys.
