By mid-January 2026, 439 VPN services had been blocked in Russia, which is 70% more than in October of last year. This is due to the expansion of the list of filtered technologies, which now includes SOCKS5 and L2TP. Despite the blocks, the popularity of VPNs is growing, and the number of users of leading services is measured in the thousands. The blocks create risks for businesses that use VPNs for legal tasks, such as remote work. Technically, the blocking works through traffic analysis by providers, but it is difficult to filter out only prohibited connections. Experts recommend that companies prepare alternative communication channels and consider more specialized solutions.
