PS5 Pro to Get Enhanced PSSR Upscaler Soon. Resident Evil Requiem Already Uses It
The PSSR upscaling technology is one of the key selling points of the PlayStation 5 Pro, as consoles don't have access to higher-quality upscalers like DLSS or advanced versions of FSR. However, Sony engineers' first attempt was somewhat flawed, as the image with PSSR became blurry in some games.
The company listened to the criticism and announced the imminent release of a new version of PSSR.
"We have been working hard on a new version of PSSR, which uses a completely different approach not only to the neural network but to the entire calculation algorithm as a whole," boasted PlayStation's lead system architect, Mark Cerny.
The enhanced upscaler is based on FSR 4 technology, which Sony and AMD specialists improved while collaborating under the Project Amethyst initiative. The joint work of the two companies became known back in 2025.
The second version of PSSR will gradually start reaching PS5 Pro users over the coming weeks. After the update, users will be able to activate the enhanced upscaler in the settings.
The first title with support for the enhanced PSSR is Resident Evil Requiem. In March, a number of already released titles will also gain support for the new PSSR.

And with the enhanced technology. Pay attention to the hair.
Digital Foundry has already examined how the fresh version of PSSR performs in Resident Evil Requiem. With ray tracing enabled, the image is upscaled to 4K from a base resolution slightly above 1080p. In this case, fine details are clearly visible on a 4K screen—for example, stitching on clothing or text on signs. Edges became sharp, and the image approaches true 4K at 60 frames per second. This is exactly what PSSR was originally intended to be.
The upscaler delivers a sharp, stable, and high-quality 4K image from a source with roughly four times fewer pixels. It is now on par with PC counterparts, and this is a colossal leap forward compared to what we saw in PSSR before. Digital Foundry
Resident Evil Requiem has already been released on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Switch 2. The game is fully translated into Russian.
