Convicts Will Remember — Gothic 1 Remake Developer Talks About Reputation System
An interview with Reinhard Pollice showed up on the PC Gamer site; he’s the director of Gothic 1 Remake and spoke about ways the world reacts to the Nameless Hero’s behavior.
- Murder isn’t shrugged off, even in a harsh mining camp — e.g., kill a peaceful NPC in front of witnesses and you earn a bad reputation within that victim’s faction. Keep it up and people will simply stop engaging with you, i.e., silence and closed doors.
- You can knock someone out and take their stuff. If you want to smooth things over with the robbed NPC, return the stolen items.
- Pollice also mentioned aspects of the ecosystem: leave meat lying around and animals will sniff it out and eat it; when two creatures clash over a carcass, the stronger one fights for the prize while a lower-tier animal won’t challenge the predator (e.g., prey won’t attack).
I think “Gothic” is an immersive role-playing game, so every opportunity in it creates such a kind of immersion that you probably won’t find in RPGs of any other type. There are features that allow you to approach situations in different ways.
