Sony May Release an Updated Version of PlayStation Portal — with OLED Screen and 120 Hz Refresh Rate
Insider Zuby_Tech reports that Sony may be working on an improved version of its PlayStation Portal cloud gaming handheld device. The tentative name for the new model is PlayStation Portal Pro.
The main focus of the update is the display. According to the source, the device will receive an OLED panel instead of the current IPS matrix. Such a transition promises a noticeable improvement in image quality: deeper black levels, increased contrast, and better color saturation.
Another significant improvement is the increase in screen refresh rate to 120 Hz. This is double the figure of the current version of the device and should provide a smoother picture, especially in dynamic games.
Furthermore, there are suggestions about a possible hardware upgrade. The exact specifications have not been disclosed yet, but it is known that the original PlayStation Portal is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chip and is designed for streaming games from a PlayStation 5 console.
The emergence of rumors about an updated model coincided with the active development of the device's software. Sony recently released a major firmware update that added support for cloud streaming for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. Thanks to this feature, users can launch games without the need to turn on their home console — a stable internet connection is sufficient.
Last year, the company already updated the PlayStation Portal lineup by introducing a version in a black color. However, the upcoming generation, if it is released, promises much more significant changes.
At the moment, the insider does not mention either the expected release dates for the PlayStation Portal Pro or the approximate price of the device. Nevertheless, the news has sparked keen interest among fans of portable gaming solutions and users of the PlayStation ecosystem.
