"Take a Risk and Try It" — Resident Evil Requiem Director Compares the Game to Sushi

Some Resident Evil fans consider the idea of two protagonists in Requiem to be a failure — they say the slower-paced Grace episodes will lull fans of RE4 to sleep, while the explosive action with Leon will scare off fans of classic gameplay. In an interview with Eurogamer, the game's director, Koshi Nakanishi, tried to convince the skeptics.

The developer's thesis is this: "Requiem" is more than the sum of its parts. As an example, the Japanese developer cited sushi.

Imagine that a thing like sushi doesn't exist. If sushi hadn't been invented yet, a fish lover would just want to eat sashimi — raw fish. And a rice lover would just want rice.

And suddenly someone says: "I made this thing, it's called sushi. It's raw fish on rice." Imagine how you would react if you loved rice — something like "Why are you putting raw fish on my rice?!". And if you preferred sashimi, you'd say: "Just give me sashimi. Why are you ruining my fish with rice?!" Here, we are inventing sushi. Even if you think you want one style, the "taste" of this game comes from the combination of two styles.

We are that guy who invented sushi. We are saying: "Trust us, take it. Take a risk and try this new product called sushi."

Koshi Nakanishi, Director of Resident Evil Requiem

After watching the RE9 trailers, players might have thought that the Leon segments are non-stop shooting and slicing zombies with a chainsaw. However, there is room for scary scenes and exploring locations with backtracking as well, Nakanishi assured.

Resident Evil Requiem will be released on February 27 for PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Switch 2. The horror game will feature Russian voice acting.
