Civilization VII's Worst Part Celebrates Anniversary with Major Expansion Announcement

A year after the release of Civilization VII, the developers have announced a large-scale free update called "Test of Time" and patch 1.3.2. Together, they will overhaul the game's key systems.

Patch 1.3.2 will improve the interface with nested tooltips, balance a number of civilizations, and add a tool for evaluating city happiness. The leader Gilgamesh will also return to the game, and all players will receive festive cosmetic items.

The main innovations await in the "Test of Time" update. It will allow players to lead one civilization through all eras, preserving its uniqueness, and introduces a syncretism mechanic for temporarily borrowing units and buildings from other peoples.

The victory system will also change. Instead of "Legacy Paths," more flexible "Triumph" conditions will appear in four directions — military, economic, cultural, and scientific. Players can start working towards these from early eras, which could lead to an early victory.

The "Legacy Paths" themselves will become a set of complex additional challenges. Completing them will grant the player instant bonuses and special cards that influence strategy in the next era.
