Metacritic has put out its yearly list of top publishers for 2025, and it's not the same old lineup. In a surprise twist, Japanese Square Enix grabbed first place for the first time; much of the buzz traces back to the rave Metacritic scores for Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles (e.g., stellar reviews and player chatter).
Second spot belongs to Chinese indie Gamirror Games, while Capcom sits third — Monster Hunter Wilds plus a string of Switch 2 ports pushed them up. Last year’s winner, Sega, slipped to seventh: Sonic Racing and Shinobi did well, yes, but nothing reached the scale of Metaphor.
As for 2026, analysts are hedging their bets on Capcom, given Resident Evil Requiem’s high marks — contingent, of course, on how review momentum holds.
