GOG Decided to Preserve the Original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time After Remake Cancellation
The GOG service announced the addition of the original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time game to its preservation program following Ubisoft's recent decision to cancel the planned remake.
Earlier this week, Ubisoft confirmed that work on the remake had been discontinued as part of a company-wide restructuring affecting numerous projects. The remake was first announced in 2020 but faced several delays and was transferred between different development studios before being canceled.
In a social media statement, GOG responded to the news by promising to preserve the 2003 original. The company stated it would work to include the game in the GOG Preservation Program and ensure its proper operation on modern systems.
While the news about the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake cancellation has greatly disappointed many of us, it also gives us an opportunity to celebrate the game that started it all.
The company added that it aims to provide "the best version you've ever played" of the original game, with improvements aimed at ensuring smooth performance on modern hardware.
The GOG Preservation Program was launched in 2024 to preserve the ability to run old PC games on modern and future systems. Games participating in the program receive updates for compatibility and stability, as well as restored content such as manuals, DLC, and offline installers.
The original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was released in 2003 and became one of the most important games in Ubisoft's lineup. It introduced parkour elements and time-manipulation-based gameplay that influenced many subsequent games.
Although Ubisoft stated it has not abandoned the Prince of Persia franchise entirely, no new projects to replace the canceled remake have been announced so far.
