God of War Creator David Jaffe: "The New God of War Looks Terrible and Will Sell Poorly"
David Jaffe — the creator of the God of War series — reacted harshly to the first showcase for God of War: Laufey. In his view the trailer doesn’t read as a new chapter in the franchise so much as a generic cinematic; the look, he said, simply doesn't sit right.
As for God of War... If it wasn’t called God of War, it would be like one of those trailers you just have to be reminded of, and you think: "Yeah, I remember, that’s pretty cool." I’m not excited about it, but of course I’ll play it, stream it, and talk about it.
He didn’t stop at tone. Jaffe predicted commercial trouble, bluntly dismissing the game’s prospects.
I think it’s terrible. I don’t think it will sell the way they need it to.
This isn’t a first for him — he’s long been outspoken about the series’ recent turns, e.g., criticizing the softened portrayal of Kratos and some of the character work in the newer entries.
