Federal Authorities Granted Legal Authority to Shut Down Internet and Communications in Russia at Their Discretion
Law Passed Instantly, President Signed
Vladimir Putin has signed a law obliging communication operators to shut down services upon request from the FSB. The document has been published on the official legal acts portal and introduces amendments to the "On Communications" law.
According to the changes, operators are required to suspend the provision of services upon receiving corresponding demands from the FSB. Specific cases for applying this measure will be determined by presidential regulatory acts.
Important addition: Operators are exempt from liability to subscribers if service disruptions are caused by compliance with the demands of the special service.
Previously, the Ministry of Digital Development explained that the amendments are necessary for the rapid response to security threats, including drone attacks, and to protect operators from lawsuits by clients.
