Chris Avellone on Bethesda: Theme Park Instead of Fallout’s Spirit

Chris Avellone, the writer of Fallout: New Vegas and designer, responded to a fan comment by sharing his opinion on Bethesda's approach to the franchise. He noted that the studio doesn’t hate Fallout but may not fully grasp its original spirit.

“They have the rights and want to create their own version, turning it into the norm. Often, it resembles a colorful but superficial theme park — though there are deep exceptions, like Far Harbor. Personally, I don't hate Bethesda. They have strengths: open worlds, exploration. But there are also weaknesses, such as building linear narratives in an open world,” Avellone explained.

Despite this assessment, the Fallout series continues to achieve high results. The second season, with four episodes already released, has a 97% approval rating from critics and 96% from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes. The final episodes will be released on February 4.
