The Long-Awaited Sequel to NieR: Automata Finally on the Horizon
Nearly a decade after the release of the cult classic Nier: Automata, Square Enix has given fans a special gift. To celebrate the game’s anniversary, the publisher released a festive trailer that combines the most striking moments from the original game, recordings from the Nier orchestral concert, and various crossovers featuring the iconic heroine 2B.
The climax of the trailer was not only the announcement of surpassing an important milestone of 10 million copies sold but also the intriguing phrase “Nier: Automata to be continued.” This phrase instantly sparked a lively reaction among series fans.
Although this is the first serious confirmation of a possible sequel in development, the wording intentionally remains quite vague. It is unclear what exactly is meant by this announcement: a full-fledged sequel, a new spin-off, an expansion of the existing universe, or something entirely different. The phrase can also be interpreted as “Nier Automata 2B continued,” which some might take as a promise of further merchandising involving 2B rather than a new game.
However, there are grounds for optimism. Last summer, it became known that several key developers of the original Nier: Automata were jointly working on an unannounced project. This strengthens the assumption that a new game in the Nier universe is only a matter of time.
