Behind the Unexpected "Friendship" Between Epic and Google Was a Secret $800 Million Deal
During the antitrust proceedings between Epic Games and Google, Judge James Donato revealed details of parallel negotiations for a major commercial partnership. According to the disclosed information, Epic plans to spend approximately $800 million over six years on Google services as part of a deal that includes joint development and marketing.
The judge expressed concerns that this deal could be a form of a hidden arrangement capable of influencing Epic's demands regarding Google's Android policies. He questioned whether this partnership, where Epic would help promote Android and Google would promote Fortnite, might force the company to soften its stance in defending the interests of all developers.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney rejected the accusations, stating that the agreement concerns licensing the Unreal Engine and developing the metaverse and does not give its store advantages on Android. He emphasized that Epic is paying Google market rates while simultaneously fighting to increase competition.
At the same time, the judge noted that the commercial deal and the settlement are being considered as a single package. This move could change the dynamics of the multi-year conflict and cast doubt on Epic's past principled statements about equal conditions for all.
