Apple Releases First 2026 Software Update with Support for New Accessories and Protection for Older Devices
Apple has introduced another set of updates for its devices. This release is notable for several reasons: besides a new build for current iPhones, the company unexpectedly released security patches for long-obsolete models.
The new firmware labeled 26.2.1 is intended for iPhones supporting the current version of iOS. Although the update is technical in nature and doesn't add user-facing features, it addresses two key tasks:
- Ensures compatibility with new accessories — specifically, the recently introduced second-generation AirTag.
- Includes bug fixes and system optimizations, which should positively impact device stability and extend battery life.
The update is already available for download. To install it, go to Settings → General → Software Update. The package size is approximately 600 MB. Apple recommends that all owners of compatible iPhones perform the update to ensure security and proper functionality with the company's new devices.
Particularly noteworthy is the release of iOS 12.5.8 for devices that have long stopped receiving new features. The security patch affected:
- iPhone 5s
- iPad mini 2
- First-generation iPad Air
- All Apple gadgets released in 2013–2014
Simultaneously, the company released targeted security updates for devices on iOS 15, 16, and 18, closing discovered vulnerabilities.
