In Marathon, running enthusiasts with free gear will have to pay with restrictions
Although the extraction shooter Marathon offers a choice of several specialized classes ("shells"), the game will also have a free gear option called Rook. However, unlike analogues in other shooters, this class has restrictions designed to maintain balance.
Rook allows you to enter a match with basic gear without risking personal items. But this safety has a price: players on this class load into the map later than others, can only play solo, and are denied access to the best loot at the start of the match.
In return, Rook receives passive camouflage from NPCs, which simplifies survival.
This is a notable contrast to the approach of ARC Raiders, where the free kit hardly limits the player and provides effective weapons, causing community discontent. ARC Raiders developers are already considering changes to their free drops, possibly inspired by Bungie's decision.
