The World of Fable is Handcrafted — No Procedural Generation

Following the large-scale presentation of the Fable reboot, Playground Games continues to reveal ambitious details about the project. In a new interview, studio head Ralph Fulton discussed the fundamental decision to abandon procedurally generated characters in favor of handcrafting them.

Instead of an algorithmic crowd, the developers have manually created the entire population of Albion — over 1000 unique NPCs. Every inhabitant has their own name, unique appearance, full voice acting, a written personality, and a system of moral beliefs. Characters have their own homes, jobs, daily routines, and even families.

As Fulton explained, this depth is designed for complete immersion. The player will be able to engage in dialogue with any resident, and in theory — even marry any of them (though for some, this will require serious effort). NPCs can be hired for jobs or fired, and their reaction to the hero's actions will depend on their personal views — ranging from admiration to open hostility.
