Analyst: Marathon sold 1.2 million copies, 70% of the run on PC
Sony and Bungie have kept quiet — a silence that, in this case, feels telling. Analyst Rhys Elliott — according to his data — lays out numbers suggesting the extraction shooter got off to a fairly restrained start.
The specialist provides the following figures:
- Total sell-through: ~1.2M copies.
- Marathon skews PC-heavy — ~70% of sales on PC; PS5 ~19%; Xbox Series ~11%.
- Playtime signals stronger engagement on PC: avg. 27.8 hrs (PC) vs. 16.5 hrs (PS5) and 17.3 hrs (XS). On Steam, ~22% of players passed the 50‑hr mark, and ~7% went over 100 hrs.
- DAU (daily active users): about 345k.
Elliott's math is backed up in reporting by Forbes journalist Paul Tassi, who cites sources at Bungie.
Both analysts land on a similar, somewhat awkward verdict: Marathon is not an outright flop on the scale of Concord, nor is it the runaway success Sony might have hoped for. For now, per Tassi, the devs are still rolling out seasonal content and sticking to their current plans — whether that holds as numbers evolve is another question.
