New EVO Owners Announce Expansion, Unveiling Tournaments Worldwide
The Evolution Championship Series has long been regarded as the pinnacle of fighting game tournaments, but in recent years it has undergone several ownership changes. The new owners have announced a revamped lineup of tournaments, including a stage in Saudi Arabia.
Just days after the Saudi company Qiddiya took 100% control of the event, which was previously partly owned by RTS and Sony, the tournament organizers revealed numerous new locations as well as a new championship format.
The main news is that the new locations will include a stage in Qiddiya’s home country, Saudi Arabia, in 2027, along with stages in China, Morocco, Brazil, and Mexico.
However, a statement on the tournament’s website emphasizes that traditional events, including tournaments in Vegas, Japan, France, and the upcoming Singapore tournament, will remain unchanged.
None of our traditional events in the US, Japan, France, nor announced events such as Singapore, will change in terms of policy, brand values, level of investment, format, or expectations. Our goal is quite the opposite: to bring this experience to more players worldwide and continue welcoming the community from all countries and with different levels of experience.
Starting in 2027, Evo will expand to new venues as part of our long-term commitment to unite fighting game players.
Evo also announced a new tournament format that will debut in the next “evolution” of the championship series: the World Fighting Game Championship. This tournament is designed to determine which FGC legend is the best not only in their main game but also across multiple fighting games, culminating with one player earning the title of Grandmaster.
