The Game Resembled Movies More Than Comics

At the GDC Festival of Gaming 2026, developers brought out footage of an early build of Marvel Rivals. The clips and screenshots didn’t feel like the finished product — they leaned hard into a realistic, film-like look that recalled the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In that prototype the characters and environments dropped a lot of the usual comic-book exaggeration. Faces, lighting, and textures aimed for a cinematic realism rather than a drawn or pop-art approach; later, the team reworked the visuals toward brighter, more stylized art, a change that altered the game's overall identity.

The community reaction was loud and split. Some argued a realistic aesthetic would have invited direct comparisons to Overwatch (vs. Blizzard’s hero shooters) and made it harder for Marvel Rivals to carve out its own space. Others said the prototype felt visually “cleaner” — maps had fewer props and visual clutter, which some players found easier on the eye.

A number of people also likened the old build to Marvel’s Avengers (servers shut down in 2023). Take Winter Soldier as an example: the early version presented him with a more grounded look and a rifle; the final release swapped both his silhouette and loadout for something different.

Developers have explained that moving toward a comic-based style loosened constraints on costume design. They’ve pointed to classic Marvel art as direct inspiration in places, and to wholly new takes elsewhere — a mix intended to give each hero a distinct feel and to appeal to varying tastes (e.g., nostalgia fans and those wanting novelty).
