Expanded crafting and no mini-map — details about the "Gothic" remake
Game director of Gothic 1 Remake Reinhard Pollice talked with a reporter from PC Gamer. Someone at Alkimia Interactive sketched out which parts they left almost untouched and which they nudged toward modern expectations — sometimes gently, sometimes not.
- As in the original Gothic, the remake skips a mini-map. The studio did toy with a toggleable version but it never felt right, so they dropped it. "If you want to understand where you are, just open the map. That's how you'll find out," the director said — blunt, and a little defiant.
- Internally there were discussions about adding side diversions (e.g., a card game, fishing, etc.). Those extras might turn up later; for now the team prefers to keep attention on the core stuff — at least that's the plan.
- Visual character creation was on the table, then off again: the developers think the Nameless Hero's canonical look is part of Gothic's identity, so they resisted full cosmetic overhaul. Fans will have to live with that choice, for better or worse.
- Pollice and crew realized one barrier to wider success in English-speaking regions was uneven German→English translation, so Alkimia rewrote the English script to feel more alive and grounded — i.e., language that suits a grim prison-world rather than clunky literal lines.
- The terse quest log has been reworked into a diary voiced by the protagonist, which makes objectives read more like personal notes than checklist entries.
- Crafting gets a boost: alchemy returns, you can create spell scrolls, and cook meals from recipes — so expect more meaningful item prep and experimentation (esp. for players who like to tinker).
The return of Gothic is scheduled for June 5. Platforms are PC (Steam, GOG), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. The remake features Russian voice acting with Petr Glants as the Nameless Hero.
